Description:
The Hechinger Institute on Education and the Media, based at Teachers College, Columbia University, is the leading resource for education journalists who need to understand and cover complex education issues. The Institute recently announced the creation of The Hechinger Report, a nonprofit news organization that will provide in-depth coverage of national education issues on its own and in collaboration with other news organizations. As part of this effort, the Institute is creating a new website that will reach a broad audience of people interested in understanding more about current education issues. The Institute seeks a strong writer and careful editor to help it prepare and adapt background materials on education issues for this site. Specifically, this freelancer will:

=Write and revise material in a form, tone and length suitable for the web. =Conduct interviews and research to update existing background materials. (Samples of these materials can be found at http://hechinger.tc.columbia.edu/default.aspx?pageid=780 ) =Do background research on potential news stories. =Produce copy that is accessible to a broad audience that will include school board members, teachers, business leaders, elected officials, legislative staff, and journalists. =Propose ways to enhance the text materials through graphics, photo essays, interactive features, audio or video.

The ideal candidate will:

-Be a creative, resourceful reporter with a strong news sense. -Write clear, authoritative prose. -Have experience and/or training in writing for the web. -Have a journalism degree and/or 2 to 3 years working for a news outlet. -Be available for infrequent meetings in person at Institute’s offices in Manhattan (travel costs will not be separately reimbursed). -Preferably have experience or an interest in covering education issues. -Be able to do battle with education-related technical language and make it accessible to a general, informed audience. The selected freelance writer/editor will be paid on a project-by-project basis that will be negotiated with the candidate selected. The work is expected to take 2 to 3 months.
