Description:
The newspaper of record in Mason County seeks a general assignment reporter to cover the towns of Belfair and Hoodsport on Hood Canal. You’ll cover everything from renegade water districts to Bigfoot enthusiasts in a community that stretches from the front end of technology to a deep, old-school rural life. The secondary reporting on this beat covers the environment in a county that boasts Washington’s largest shellfishery and strong tribal and state fishing industries. Founded on the timber industry, the surrounding forests still produce for one mill and dozens of forest products companies.

The Shelton-Mason County Journal is a stable and historic community weekly that holds its circulation at 10,000. The position is open now; a Pacific Northwest candidate with staff reporting experience of one year is preferred to join our newsroom of seven. The Journal keeps an office in Belfair to aid with this beat. A recent college grad with experience at a college daily or freelance experience is also encouraged to apply. Knowing something about photography will bolster all considerations.

Belfair, Washington, is situated on Hood Canal in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains. Life is good here with wilderness on one side and Seattle and Tacoma just one hour away.
