Defenders is seeking a talented undergrad, grad student or post-grad hoping to launch a career in journalism. Defenders is a quarterly wildlife conservation print magazine that reaches 300,000+ subscribers. Articles are science-based but advocacy driven. This is a writing-intensive program that provides published bylines and offers insight to magazine publishing from conception through pre-press production. Opportunities for editing and photo editing are possible as are multimedia projects and other online needs, depending on the applicant's skills and Defenders' needs at the time. Defenders is headquartered in downtown Washington, D.C., near public transportation and in a very walkable and bike-friendly city.
Qualified candidates should have completed at least their junior year in college and be working toward a journalism, mass comm or English degree. A knack for storytelling is more important than a science-writing background. Enthusiasm for wildlife and wild lands or a passion for conservation policy is valued. Ability to meet deadlines and knowledge of AP style is essential.
