Houston Press photo interns shoot a variety of editorial slideshows and blogs each week. Slideshow subjects include: concerts, art walks, cultural festivals, rallies, conventions and other news events. Shots from slideshows and blogs may also appear in the print edition. We encourage interns to present ideas that could be used for slideshows and other presentations on the web. Interns may also be invited to attend feature and cover shoots. In the past, interns have even photographed covers, features and restaurants for the print edition. Interns work closely with the art director to receive feedback on their work.
Houston Press video interns produce content for the paper’s website to accompany its print features and online reporting. Video interns coordinate with the editor, reporters, web editor and art director to produce two brief segments each week, as well as two long-term projects over the course of the semester. (S)he must have excellent communication and organizational skills, well-developed creative and production skills, and be comfortable working independently and juggling several projects on tight deadlines.
Some offices are equipped with cameras and accessories, but in general, equipment is not provided. Interns must have reliable transportation; Voice Media Group will reimburse for mileage and assignment expenses. Candidates must be proficient in Apple Final Cut Pro X and Compressor, with some knowledge of Apple Motion as well as any editing software the intern may own.
