PRI has an immediate opening for an experienced storyteller to join our newsroom in a part-time position as Digital Editor/Producer, The person in this role will be responsible for working closely each day with the radio producers at PRI’s The World to help identify sharp angles for digital pieces and develop them into compelling written copy that is appropriate for using online, on mobile, and on social channels. This is not a management position, this is a position for someone who wants to get their hands dirty every day, helping to make good radio content find its voice online. Ideal candidates will have experience in both radio and digitally-focused newsrooms, will understand how a radio show is produced and — perhaps most importantly — be an expert in what makes a story succeed online. The person in this position will have to juggle multiple tasks on a given day, and prioritize what gets done based on what has the most journalistic merit and what will have the most impact. The ideal candidate will be thoroughly comfortable with social media and can picture how a story can be translated from audio to digital and social.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Works alongside World radio producers to identify and develop distinctive angles for digital versions of radio stories.
  • Communicates easily and clearly, and listens well.
  • Understands audio journalism and can comfortably identify the best storytelling approach to take that audio and convert it to digital media.
  • Edits stories for content, organization and style before they’re published on
  • Writes and reviews social posts that accompany edited stories.
  • Writes original stories, including short shareable articles and longer research/analysis.
  • Monitors site traffic and story performance with tools like Crowdtangle, Chartbeat, Google Analytics and Facebook Analytics.
  • Writes headlines and participates in shareable headline clinics.
  • Stays on top of best practices in digital journalism and is comfortable informally teaching colleagues.

Required Qualifications:

Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience required.
  • At least 3 years of increasing responsibilities and success in digital journalism.
  • Familiarity with social media management tools, such as TweetDeck and SocialFlow.
  • Excellence in writing and experience improving others’ writing through editing.
  • Familiarity with multimedia reporting tools.
  • Ability to collect data, establish facts, and solve complex problems.
  • Demonstrated success building and maintaining effective relationships through a variety of communication strategies and with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Experience working collaboratively in a newsroom setting to develop story ideas and see them through.
  • Self-motivated and self-directed; ability to set and meet aggressive goals and to recognize successes and challenges associated with those goals. Highly organized but flexible, with the ability to handle multiple projects and work under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to express independent judgment to identify opportunities.
  • Ability to embrace strategic direction and goals and to consider company-wide impact when making decisions.
  • In-depth experience creating or editing multimedia on a major content management system.
  • Ability to travel as required.

This is a temporary, part-time hourly position with expectations of approximately 30 hours per week. This position should be based in Boston and is funded through June 30, 2017, with the possibility of extension.
