Description:

Starnes Publishing, publisher of multiple award-winning community newspapers in metro Birmingham, is seeking a page designer to join our team. In this position, the ideal candidate will be expected to perform the following primary responsibilities: 

  • Design a variety of eye-catching page layouts -- including front pages and covers -- for multiple mediums including newsprint and magazines;
  • Copy edit articles following AP and in-house guidelines, as well as write accurate headlines;
  • Create graphic illustrations and/or infographics;
  • Tone a variety of photos for best reproduction in both print and web;
  • Build creative and unique ads for multiple mediums including newsprint, magazines and web;
  • See multiple projects on varying schedules through from beginning to end and prepare files for prepress.

Our designers are encouraged to think outside the box and be visually creative. Designers are expected to take initiative and be able to articulate the thought process for their design decisions. Experience in newspaper or magazine design is required. Strong time management and organizational skills, along with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail, are a must. The ideal candidate will be proficient in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop (CS5 or newer); experience with Illustrator is desired. Photography skills are an added bonus.

Recent graduates with relevant work experience and excellent portfolios will be considered.
